Every topic is examined through an HGV lens, preparing you directly for the Paper 1 knowledge test and the road haulage case study scenario.
Paper 1 tests your knowledge across the syllabus areas above, with particular weight given to vehicle standards, driver hours, and Operator Licence conditions as they apply to goods vehicles.
The case study paper places you in a realistic road haulage scenario, often involving a fleet compliance issue, a driver hours breach, or an Operator Licence condition that has been put at risk. You are assessed on the decision you would make as the named Transport Manager, not on how much you can recall.
Successful candidates receive the Level 3 Certificate of Professional Competence in Road Haulage, awarded by CILT. The qualification does not expire, though staying current with road haulage legislation is part of the role.
If your operation also includes buses, coaches or minibuses with nine or more seats, you will need the Transport Manager CPC PSV as a separate qualification.
Yes. The online course covers the same syllabus as the classroom course and leads to the same Level 3 Certificate of Professional Competence in Road Haulage. You will work through structured modules and tutor-led virtual sessions rather than attending in person.
You only need to resit the paper you did not pass. If you pass Paper 1 but not the case study, you can retake the case study alone without sitting the multiple-choice exam again, and vice versa.
Yes. The certificate awarded on passing is identical regardless of which format you studied through. CILT does not distinguish between routes on the certificate itself.
Both qualifications follow the same exam structure and core subject areas, but HGV applies them to goods vehicle operations, covering vehicle weights, load security and goods-specific compliance, while PSV applies the same principles to passenger transport, covering accessibility, passenger safety and PSV licensing categories.
