About this training

As fleets adopt more electric, hybrid and hydrogen vehicles, workshops need to stay ahead of new technology and safety requirements. Working on high-voltage or hydrogen systems without proper training risks serious injury and regulatory non-compliance.

Lloyd Morgan Group's electric vehicle workshop training covers the full pathway: awareness courses for anyone working around these vehicles without repairing them, and repair and replacement courses for technicians carrying out diagnostic, test and repair work on high-voltage systems. Each programme is IMI-accredited and built for practical use in a working commercial vehicle environment.

Who should attend

Level 1 - Awareness

Parts advisors, valeters, workshop assistants and delivery drivers who work around, but don't repair, high-voltage or hydrogen systems.
Fleet managers, recovery personnel and hire companies handling electric, hybrid or hydrogen vehicles.

No prior EV experience is required.

Level 3 - Repair & replacement

Qualified vehicle technicians, diagnostic technicians and auto-electricians working at Level 3 or equivalent, ready to bring EV/HEV repair in-house.
Workshops and service centres expanding into EV, hybrid or hydrogen repair and replacement work.

Requires at least a Level 1 award or equivalent.

Course content & delivery

Key topics covered

The differences between hybrid, electric and hydrogen vehicles and the technology each uses.
Hazards linked to high-voltage electrical systems and hydrogen storage and refuelling.
Safe working practices around electric, hybrid and hydrogen vehicles, including charging, refuelling and recovery operations.
Diagnosing faults in high-voltage propulsion systems, modules and wiring (Level 3).
Safe removal, replacement and reintegration of high-voltage components, using specialist tools, PPE and diagnostic equipment (Level 3).
Recording repair outcomes and reporting to support workshop compliance (Level 3).

Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Awareness

Duration: Half to one day
Entry requirement: None formal — a basic interest in the subject is sufficient

Covers the differences between hybrid and fully electric vehicles, high-voltage hazards, safe working practices including charging and recovery, and how your role affects wider workshop electrical safety.

Heavy Electric/Hybrid System Repair & Replacement

Duration: 3 days, including online exam and practical assessment
Entry requirement: At least a Level 1 Electric Vehicle Awareness or equivalent
Who it's for: Qualified vehicle or diagnostic technicians and auto-electricians working at Level 3 or equivalent on HGV and PSV platforms

Covers safe working practice and risk control for high-voltage systems, specialist tools, PPE and diagnostic equipment, fault diagnosis in propulsion and high-voltage modules, and removal, replacement and reintegration of high-voltage components. Battery pack dismantling is not covered in depth.

Level 3 Award

Light Electric/Hybrid System Repair & Replacement

Qualification: IMI Level 3 Award in Light Electric/Hybrid Vehicle System Repair and Replacement. Code: 603/4182/8
Duration: 3 days, including online exam and practical assessment
Entry requirement: At least a Level 1 Electric Vehicle Awareness or equivalent (Level 2 recommended)
Who it's for: Light vehicle or diagnostic technicians and auto-electricians progressing from Level 2, dealerships, independents and fleet workshops servicing EV cars and vans

Covers safe working steps for high-voltage light vehicle systems, fault-finding on drives, inverters, converters and control modules, removal and refitting of high-voltage components, and system testing and verification. Battery pack dismantling is not covered in depth.

FAQs

Yes. The Level 3 repair and replacement courses require at least a Level 1 award (or equivalent) as an entry requirement. Level 1 is open to anyone working near or on these vehicles, regardless of prior experience.

Level 1 is an awareness qualification for staff who work around electric, hybrid or hydrogen vehicles without repairing them, such as parts advisors, valeters and recovery staff. Level 3 is a hands-on qualification for technicians who diagnose, repair and replace high-voltage components.

It depends on your role. If you work around electric, hybrid or hydrogen vehicles without carrying out repairs, an IMI Level 1 award covers the awareness and safe working practice you need. If you're a technician diagnosing and repairing high-voltage systems, you'll need a Level 3 award, which requires Level 1 (or equivalent) as an entry point. No. Both Level 3 courses cover repair and replacement of high-voltage components and systems, but not high-voltage battery module dismantling in depth.

A light vehicle is any vehicle under 3.5 tonnes. A heavy vehicle is any vehicle over 3.5 tonnes.
