Roadside Assistance & Recovery Training

The IVR VR scheme is the national modular training programme administered by the Institute of Vehicle Recovery (IVR). It covers the full range of skills required in roadside assistance and vehicle recovery, from core safety and assessment modules through to specialist heavy recovery and electric vehicle handling. The scheme meets the requirements of National Highways Sector Scheme 17/17B (NHSS17/17B) and Publicly Available Specification 43 (PAS 43), and is the recognised training standard across the UK recovery sector.

VR03, officially titled Assess the Roadside Situation, is one of the IVR Core Modules. It covers the skills recovery operatives need to approach and manage a scene safely: correct parking and approach procedures, dynamic risk assessment, establishing hazard zones, managing drivers and passengers, use of PPE, and the procedure for leaving the scene. It is the module most directly focused on live roadside safety and is the minimum standard required by most fleet operators and work providers for personnel attending live roads.

NHSS17 (National Highways Sector Scheme 17) is the sector scheme governing the standards required for recovery operators working on the national road network, including motorways and major A-roads managed by National Highways. The IVR VR scheme is the nationally recognised training framework that meets NHSS17 and NHSS17B requirements. Recovery operators working under contracts that require NHSS17 compliance need to be trained to VR scheme standards.

Typical duration is one or two days depending on format, equipment and vehicle types.

Yes. The training covers commercial vehicle recovery across HGVs, PSVs and light commercial vehicles. It also includes an awareness module for electric and hybrid vehicle recovery, covering the specific risks of high-voltage systems, safe isolation procedures and the additional hazards recovery personnel need to understand before attending an EV breakdown.

Yes. On-site delivery is available across the UK. Training at your own depot or recovery yard means sessions can be built around your specific equipment, vehicle types and operational layout, making the content directly applicable to your team's day-to-day work. Classroom and blended formats are also available.

Yes. All delegates receive a certificate of attendance from Lloyd Morgan Group on completion. Training records and competence evidence are provided to support operator licence audits, DVSA inspections and internal compliance reviews.
