The IRTEC Advanced Technician Qualification sits at the top of the IRTEC scheme. Where the Service Maintenance route confirms competence in routine servicing and the Inspection Technician route covers safety inspections, the Advanced route asks a harder question: when a modern HGV or PSV develops a fault, can you trace it, fix it and prove you're working across every major vehicle system?

Assessment spans five technical areas, from engine and electrical diagnostics through to braking, chassis and mechanical systems, and it is the combination that matters. Plenty of experienced fitters are strong in one or two areas. The Advanced Technician licence demonstrates, through independent assessment, that you are competent across all of them.

The IRTEC Advanced Technician licence requires successful completion of both theory and practical assessments:

Stage 1: Under Pinning Knowledge (UPK) Theory Test
An online examination covering vehicle systems theory, diagnostic principles and maintenance procedure. Passing it opens your 12-month window for the practicals.

Stage 2: Five Practical Assessments
Each is assessed hands-on by a qualified IRTEC assessor, working on a vehicle, and each typically takes a full day:

• Engine electrical systems. Working from a reported symptom to a confirmed root cause across engine management, sensors and charging circuits, using diagnostic equipment and live data rather than guesswork.
• Mechanical systems. Strip-down, measurement and repair decisions on engines and transmissions, with the assessor watching how you work as well as what you conclude.
• Braking systems. Air brake layouts, ABS and EBS, testing and diagnosing faults in the systems that DVSA examiners scrutinise hardest.
• Chassis systems. Suspension, steering and axle work, including the measurement and reporting discipline that separates advanced technicians from experienced fitters.
• Electrical systems. Vehicle circuits, lighting and electrical fault diagnosis, evidenced through correct use of wiring diagrams and test equipment.

Passing the UPK test starts a 12-month clock to complete all five practical assessments, and if the clock runs out you sit the theory again and start over. Five full assessment days inside a year sounds comfortable until workshop schedules, vehicle availability and assessor bookings get involved. Our advice:

• Book your first practical before you sit the UPK. Candidates who leave booking until after the theory result routinely lose two to three months of their window.
• Aim for one module every eight to ten weeks. That completes the set with margin to spare, rather than cramming three assessments into the final quarter.
• Start with your strongest system. An early pass settles nerves and lets you target preparation time at the areas you find harder.
• Leave contingency at the end. If a module does not go to plan, you want time in the window to prepare properly and take it again.
