Aqueous Film Forming FOAM (AFFF) Will be banned July 2025

In the UK, the use of Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) fire extinguishers will be banned by July 4, 2025. This is due to health and environmental concerns.

What’s changing

  • AFFF extinguishers will be banned due to the harmful chemicals they contain. These chemicals are known as “forever chemicals” because they are difficult to break down and can build up in humans and animals.
  • The ban on PFOA in class B firefighting foams will take effect on April 6, 2025.

What should I do?

  • Audit your fire safety equipment and replace any AFFF extinguishers.
  • Train your team on how to use the new extinguishers.
  • Use eco-friendly alternatives to AFFF, such as water mist extinguishers, CO2 extinguishers, or dry chemical agents.

Other fire safety changes in 2025

  • Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEPs) will be introduced to help people evacuate safely in the event of a fire. PEEPs are especially important for vulnerable people.
