Annual Testing: Tachograph Seal Requirements – Important Update

Ensuring Your HGV and PSV Fleet Passes Annual Testing MOT First Time

At Lloyd Morgan Group, we’re committed to keeping you informed about regulatory changes that affect your transport operations. Recent clarification from DVSA regarding tachograph seals during annual testing requires immediate attention from all HGV and PSV operators.

The Critical Detail: 1C Tachograph Seal ‘Snap Off’ Section

All 1C tachograph seals feature a ‘snap off’ section that must be completely removed by the authorised tachograph centre during calibration or repair work. This isn’t just a technical detail – it’s now a key compliance requirement that will determine whether your vehicle passes its annual test.

What This Means for Your Operation

If the snap off section hasn’t been completely removed, your tachograph is considered unsealed according to regulations. This will result in an automatic MOT failure, requiring your vehicle to return to an authorised tachograph centre for re-calibration before you can book a retest.

The Retest Process

During retesting, DVSA assessors will verify both the new calibration and correct installation of the 1C tacho seal. Vehicles presenting for retest without proper recalibration will fail again, causing further operational delays.

Protecting Your Fleet and Licence

For operators, this represents both a compliance risk and potential operational disruption. Vehicles failing annual tests due to improperly sealed tachographs will face downtime while awaiting re-calibration and retesting.

Our Recommendation

Before your next annual test, we recommend conducting pre-MOT inspections that include checking your tachograph seal installation. As part of our comprehensive vehicle inspection services, Lloyd Morgan Group can help identify potential issues before they become costly failures.
