DVSA has updated its guidance on ‘opting out’ for Driver CPC training for qualified drivers.

New DVSA Guidance: Opting Out of National Driver CPC Training for European Driving.

If you’re a professional driver looking to work across both the UK and Europe, there’s an important update from the DVSA you need to know. The rules around Driver CPC training have changed—and failing to act could limit where you’re allowed to drive.

The DVSA has updated its guidance on how qualified drivers can opt out of National Driver CPC training. This change affects drivers who:

  • Have already completed a National Driver CPC course
  • Intend to drive professionally in Europe

To maintain your Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC), you must complete 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years. But here’s the catch:

  • If you want to drive professionally in both the UK and Europe, only International training courses will count.
  • You can now opt out of National courses using the Driver CPC periodic training hours service. This ensures those hours don’t count toward your total if you’re aiming for an International Driver CPC.

If your training includes National courses when your Driver Qualification Card (DQC) is issued, you’ll receive a National Driver CPC only. That means:

  • You won’t be allowed to drive professionally in Europe
  • Any International training hours you’ve completed can’t be reused to get an International DQC later

This update is a crucial step for drivers who want flexibility across borders. If you’re planning to work in Europe, make sure your training hours are aligned with International standards—and use the opt-out feature to protect your eligibility.
