New “O-Licence Protection” Policy Helps Hauliers Avoid Costly Oversights

A newly launched O-Licence protection policy, backed by an insurance broker and legal experts, is designed to help hauliers stay ahead of critical operator-licence (O‑licence) responsibilities and avoid administrative missteps that could endanger their operations.

In partnership with transport law specialists JMW, commercial insurance broker McCarron Coates is offering operators proactive legal support and helpline services to address seven common O‑licence compliance pitfalls

The initiative comes in response to increased DVSA scrutiny, and the financial strains caused by rising costs and late payments, all of which can threaten licence continuity.

Tackling the 7 Key Risks to your O-Licence

  1. Licence record inaccuracies – updates in company structure or directors must be reflected immediately in licence documentation, or risk inconsistencies during a Traffic Commissioner review .
  2. Working capital shortfalls – with strict minimum capital thresholds (£8,000 for the first vehicle, then £4,500 per vehicle), hauliers must ensure genuine liquidity is maintained. Loan funding may no longer satisfy.
  3. Cutting back maintenance – reducing maintenance budgets puts compliance – and road safety – at risk. Operators must continue to follow the DVSA Guide to Maintaining Roadworthiness.
  4. Misusing driver arrangements – passing licence control to drivers via their own limited companies can breach undertakings. Improper subcontractor use can trigger sanctions .

5–7. Other hazards include inadequate record‑keeping, missed statutory inspections, and overlooked OCRS (Operator Compliance Risk Score) monitoring.

The new protection policy provides early-alert warnings and legal advice to support operators before minor oversights escalate into Traffic Commissioner interventions.

Why This Matters

If your licence is suspended or revoked, the ramifications include safety investigations, financial uncertainty, and reputational damage –  on top of the cost of legal representation. With the current economic strains, even minor administrative errors may have severe consequences.
