Transport Manager CPC – HGV (Heavy Goods Vehicle)

The HGV Transport Manager CPC is the recognised qualification for anyone responsible for managing heavy goods vehicle operations. It gives you the knowledge and legal understanding required to meet the standards of the Traffic Commissioners and maintain your Operator Licence.

If you’re managing or planning to manage vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, this is the course you need.

Who this course is for?

This course is for professionals working in or moving into road haulage management roles, including:
  • Transport managers for HGV operators
  • Fleet supervisors and compliance officers
  • Haulage company directors
  • Owner-drivers upgrading from a Restricted Licence to a Standard Licence
It’s also valuable for anyone who wants a deeper understanding of HGV compliance and transport legislation.

What the course includes

The HGV Transport Manager CPC course covers the full syllabus set by the awarding bodies. It prepares you for both the multiple-choice and case study exams.

You’ll learn about:
  • Operator Licence requirements for HGVs
  • Vehicle weights, dimensions, and maintenance standards
  • Driver hours, working time, and tachograph rules
  • Safe loading, securing, and transport of goods
  • Record keeping, reporting, and compliance management
  • Business and financial management for transport operations
  • Health and safety responsibilities of transport managers

Assessment and certification

The qualification is assessed through:
  • A multiple-choice exam to test your knowledge
  • A case study exam based on real-world transport scenarios
Successful candidates receive the Level 3 Certificate of Professional Competence in Road Haulage, awarded by CILT (Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport) or OCR.

Once achieved, the qualification remains valid for life, though staying up to date with legislation is essential.

FAQs

If you hold a Standard Operator Licence, you must either hold a Transport Manager CPC yourself or appoint someone who does.

If you only have a Restricted Licence, you don’t need the CPC, but you’re still legally responsible for keeping your operation compliant. Many owner-drivers still take the course to understand their obligations and avoid licence issues.

The HGV CPC covers the management of goods vehicles over 3.5 tonnes, while the PSV CPC focuses on passenger vehicles with nine or more seats.

Both qualifications follow the same structure but apply the rules to different vehicle types and operational challenges.

Yes. You can study the Transport Manager CPC entirely online or attend a classroom course. Online learning gives you the flexibility to study at your own pace, while classroom training provides direct tutor support and group discussion. Both routes prepare you for the same exams.

Once you’ve passed, the Transport Manager CPC qualification does not expire. You don’t need to renew it, but you should keep up to date with any changes in transport law or compliance requirements to stay effective in your role.

Good location and course, I think given the subject and content keeping it interesting is difficult but Paul managed to do so through general conversation would recommend to others.
