Tyre Management & Maintenance Guide

An update has been released by The British Tyre Manufacturers’ Association of its guide to tyre management for heavy commercial vehicles.

The DVSA and vehicle operator associations have been working together to develop the revised guide.

The guide includes information in relation to maintaining road worthiness, new tyre age regulations and the importance of environmental considerations in tyre management.

Ten year old tyres

As of the 1st February 2021 The Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) (Amendment) Regulations 2020 will come into force. From this date it will become illegal to fit tyre over 10 years older to:

  • the front axle of a goods vehicle with a maximum gross weight exceeding 3,500 kg
  • the front axle of a bus or coach – including minibuses
  • the rear axle of a minibus with single rear wheels fitted

Tyres that are 10 years or older will become failure items on annual tests when fitted to a relevant vehicle along with tyres that don’t display a date code.

An S marked prohibition will be issued when a vehicle encountered at the roadside is fitted with tyres that are aged 10 years or older and a follow up investigation will take place.
