Clean Air Zone


From 1st June 2021 Birmingham have put The Class D Clean Air Zone in place, they have began charging non-compliant vehicles.

The zone operates 24 hours a day 365 days a year. The road’s the zone covers are within the A4540 Middleway Ring Road.

  1. Non-compliant vehicle that enter the zone will be charged daily.
  2. Vehicles will only pay once per day, they can move in and out of the zone without incurring additional charges.
  3.  Class D CAZ all vehicles (apart from mopeds and motorcycels) that are not otherwise exempt will be charged.
Exempt vehicles:

  • Diesel – Euro 6 (light vehicles) or Euro VI (heavy vehicles)
  • Petrol – Euro 4
  • Gas – Euro 6 (light vehicles) or Euro VI (heavy vehicles)
  • Fully electric or hydrogen fuel cell
  • Hybrid electric – the diesel/petrol engine must meet the relevant emission criteria


Charges for vehicles that do not meet minimum emission standards are;

  • LGV’s, Cars, Minibuses and Taxi’s – £8
  • HGV’s, Buses and Coaches – £50



By creating a clean air business account this allows businesses to upload details of UK registered vehicles and pay any charges for non-compliant vehicles that enter the zone.

If you want an account your business will have to have at least two vehicles.

When paying for any charges on your account you have a payment window.


  1. On the day
  2. Six days in advance
  3. Six days after the vehicle had entered the zone.
