About the IRTEC Service Maintenance Technician Accreditation

The IRTEC Service Maintenance Technician accreditation certifies the skills and knowledge of technicians who carry out service and maintenance work on heavy and light commercial vehicles. It’s designed to confirm that your team can complete repairs and inspections safely, accurately, and in line with industry requirements.

Achieving this accreditation helps workshops demonstrate compliance with DVSA expectations, improve service quality, and increase customer confidence. It’s aimed at technicians responsible for diagnosing faults, repairing systems, and maintaining vehicles to a professional standard.

What the Accreditation Covers

The IRTEC Service Maintenance Technician Licence assesses a technician’s theoretical knowledge and practical competence in vehicle service and maintenance.

To achieve the licence, candidates must first pass an Underpinning Knowledge (UPK) test, consisting of 30 multiple-choice questions, taken at an IMI-approved assessment centre. Following successful completion of the UPK test, candidates have 12 months to complete all required practical assessments.

The Service Maintenance Technician practical assessments cover the following areas:
  • Powertrain systems
  • Chassis systems
  • Braking systems
  • Computer-based test equipment
  • Vehicle electrics
Candidates must achieve a pass in one practical assessment from each area, in addition to the UPK test, to be awarded the IRTEC Service Maintenance Technician Licence.

Once accredited, technicians agree to comply with the IRTEC Code of Conduct and receive a licence card and certificate. Accredited technicians are also added to the IRTEC Technician Register, confirming their professional status. As an additional benefit, IRTEC licence holders are eligible to apply for a free Halfords Trade Card.

IRTEC Service Maintenance Technician is a nationally recognised accreditation that certifies the competence of technicians who carry out service and maintenance work on large commercial vehicles. The qualification demonstrates that a technician has the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to diagnose faults, repair vehicle systems, and maintain commercial vehicles to professional standards in line with DVSA requirements.

The assessment consists of two parts: first, you must pass an Underpinning Knowledge (UPK) test, which is a multiple-choice theory exam with 30 questions taken at an IMI-approved assessment centre. Once you've passed the UPK test, you then need to complete five practical assessments covering different vehicle systems. You have 12 months from passing your UPK test to complete all practical assessments.

You need to pass a total of six assessments: one Underpinning Knowledge (theory) test and five practical assessments—one from each of the five assessment areas. All assessments must be passed at Service Maintenance level.

Yes, Lloyd Morgan Group can deliver IRTEC assessments at approved centres or on-site at your workshop, providing flexibility to minimise disruption to your operations. Contact our team on 01543 897505 to discuss on-site assessment options.

IRTEC licences are typically valid for five years, after which they need to be renewed. Renewal ensures that technicians maintain their competence and stay current with industry developments and regulatory requirements.

The Service Maintenance Technician qualification focuses on technicians who carry out repairs, servicing, and maintenance work on commercial vehicles. The Inspection Technician qualification is specifically for those conducting safety inspections and pre-MOT checks. Service Maintenance is about fixing and maintaining vehicles, whilst Inspection is about assessing vehicle roadworthiness and compliance.
