IRTEC Service Maintenance Technician is a nationally recognised accreditation that certifies the competence of technicians who carry out service and maintenance work on large commercial vehicles. The qualification demonstrates that a technician has the theoretical knowledge and practical skills to diagnose faults, repair vehicle systems, and maintain commercial vehicles to professional standards in line with DVSA requirements.
The assessment consists of two parts: first, you must pass an Underpinning Knowledge (UPK) test, which is a multiple-choice theory exam with 30 questions taken at an IMI-approved assessment centre. Once you've passed the UPK test, you then need to complete five practical assessments covering different vehicle systems. You have 12 months from passing your UPK test to complete all practical assessments.
You need to pass a total of six assessments: one Underpinning Knowledge (theory) test and five practical assessments—one from each of the five assessment areas. All assessments must be passed at Service Maintenance level.
Yes, Lloyd Morgan Group can deliver IRTEC assessments at approved centres or on-site at your workshop, providing flexibility to minimise disruption to your operations. Contact our team on 01543 897505 to discuss on-site assessment options.
IRTEC licences are typically valid for five years, after which they need to be renewed. Renewal ensures that technicians maintain their competence and stay current with industry developments and regulatory requirements.
The Service Maintenance Technician qualification focuses on technicians who carry out repairs, servicing, and maintenance work on commercial vehicles. The Inspection Technician qualification is specifically for those conducting safety inspections and pre-MOT checks. Service Maintenance is about fixing and maintaining vehicles, whilst Inspection is about assessing vehicle roadworthiness and compliance.
