IRTEC accreditation confirms your commercial vehicle technicians meet industry standards for safety, competence, and professionalism. Managed by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) on behalf of IRTE. IRTEC validates the skills of technicians working across HGV, PSV, and trailer maintenance.
Managed by the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) on behalf of IRTE, a professional sector of the Society of Operations Engineers, IRTEC validates both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Many workshops combine IRTEC technician accreditation with IRTE Workshop Accreditation to demonstrate compliance at both individual and facility level, which strengthens their position during operator licence applications.
An IRTEC licence is valid for five years and certifies the individual technician - not their employer. This means your accreditation travels with you throughout your career, appearing on the official IRTEC Technicians Directory and demonstrating your commitment to the IRTEC code of conduct.
The scheme has evolved significantly since its launch. In January 2026, IRTEC introduced updated assessment materials for Inspection Technician routes, including modernised vehicle naming conventions (HGV, MGV, PSV), simplified documentation, and an open-book approach to knowledge tests. These changes reflect the scheme's responsiveness to industry needs whilst maintaining rigorous standards.
If you're involved in inspecting, maintaining, or repairing HGVs, PSVs, or heavy vehicle trailers, IRTEC accreditation validates your practical competence and opens doors to better positions and higher pay. The scheme covers five distinct levels—from Service Maintenance Technician through to Master Technician—allowing you to progress as your skills develop.
IRTEC-accredited staff strengthen your workshop's credibility during DVSA investigations, operator licence applications, and when tendering for fleet maintenance contracts. Many major operators now require IRTEC accreditation as standard in their service level agreements.
Whether you maintain vehicles in-house or contract work to third parties, IRTEC accreditation provides independent proof of technical competence. This supports your operator licence obligations, demonstrates due diligence to Traffic Commissioners, and reduces the risk of maintenance-related prohibitions.
IRTEC assessment is carried out by IMI-approved assessors who operate independently from your business. This independence carries weight with enforcement bodies, customers, and stakeholders in ways that internal training records cannot match.
The DVSA uses IRTEC to accredit its own vehicle inspectors. Major fleet operators increasingly specify IRTEC accreditation in maintenance contracts. Traffic Commissioners recognise IRTEC when assessing operator competence during public inquiries.
IRTEC accreditation isn't just a tick-box exercise. It's structured around five progressive levels that match career development from Service Maintenance Technician through to Master Technician. Once accredited, you're listed on the official IRTEC Technicians Directory and gain access to benefits including a free Halfords Trade Card.
For operators, having IRTEC-accredited inspectors strengthens your position during DVSA audits, supports applications for Earned Recognition status, and provides clear evidence of maintenance system competence when defending your operator licence.

If your technicians need preparation before assessment, Lloyd Morgan Group offers HGV vehicle inspector training and PSV vehicle inspector training courses that develop the practical skills needed to pass IRTEC assessment. Our workshop training programmes provide broader technical development for engineering teams.
For operators planning systematic workforce development, we can help structure a programme that combines IRTEC assessment with maintenance system audits and workshop accreditation to create a comprehensive compliance framework.
Lloyd Morgan Group has supported transport operators, technicians, and workshops for over 20 years. Our assessors have hands-on experience in both HGV and PSV maintenance, ensuring every assessment is fair, relevant, and focused on real-world standards.
We provide:
Your IRTEC licence remains valid for five years from the date of assessment. We recommend booking renewal assessments 6–8 weeks before expiry to avoid any gap in your accredited status. Lloyd Morgan Group can schedule renewal assessments to fit around your workshop operations with minimal disruption.
Assessments can take place at your workshop or at Lloyd Morgan Group-approved test centres. Knowledge tests must be completed at an IRTEC-approved assessment centre, whilst practical assessments offer more flexibility depending on your requirements.
Requirements vary by IRTEC level:
If you don't pass the knowledge test or practical assessment, you can retake. After passing the knowledge test, you have 12 months to complete the practical elements. Your assessor will provide feedback on areas requiring improvement.
Yes. IRTEC is endorsed by the IMI and recognised across the transport sector as evidence of technical competence. The DVSA itself uses IRTEC to accredit its own vehicle inspectors, and Traffic Commissioners recognise IRTEC accreditation when assessing operator competence.
From 31 January 2026, Inspection Technician routes use updated assessment materials with:
Major fleet operators increasingly require IRTEC-accredited technicians in service level agreements. The scheme strengthens your position during DVSA audits, supports Earned Recognition applications, and differentiates your workshop in a competitive market.
Not legally, but many operators pursue both for maximum credibility. IRTEC validates individual technician competence whilst IRTE Workshop Accreditation assesses facility systems. This combined approach is particularly valuable when applying for Earned Recognition status or tendering for fleet contracts.
