HGV Trailer – MOT Fails

  1. Brake System Components
  2. Service Brake
  3. Parking Brake

The top 3 fail items for trailers at annual test is brakes – this makes up almost 10 % of all trailer failures for this quarter

PSV – MOT Failures

The top 3 failure items for PSV Vehicles presented at annual test are

  1. Interior of body

Making up collectively almost 7% of all failures for this section in this quarter

Roadside Encounters

Here’s some suggestions to help you focus on the issues listed above

Annual Test

  • Complete a thorough inspection prior to leaving for MOT by competent inspectors
  • Ensure you complete a brake test, and your team understand how to read the reports
  • Ensure the people inspecting the vehicle have time to conduct a thorough inspection and they’re educated to a good standard to be able to identify defects
  • Always check your defects against the current version of the DVSA tester’s manual
  • Investigate your failures – this will shine a light on how your team potentially missed the issue – poor repairs, lack of thorough inspection, force majeure. This will help prevent your next failure
  • If you use external repair agents – make sure your vehicles are being prepared for MOT thoroughly and not presented to establish a list of issue for repair and representation. All because you may use external repair agents you still need to monitor their performance to ensure they are giving you the best service possible and do not affect your reliability or

Roadside

The quality of driver walk round checks is clearly in question here as all the roadside top 3’s for all sections is potentially identifiable by the driver prior to using the vehicle.
